Reading Response (RR) Assignment 3.1

After watching the TED Talk video and after reading chapter 11 in "The Virtual Student" and before reading chapter 3, please answer the following questions (using Word or another word processing program):

  1. What concerns did Peter Norvig express in his TED talk when he was designing his course? Or, put another way, what issues guided his course design?
  2. What stands out the most in Chapter 11 as it pertains to you and your own learning experiences?

Your responses will be submitted together with your responses from Assignment 3.2 and 3.3.

After reading Chapter 3 in your text, please respond to the following question in the form of a 2-3 paragraph (no more than 1 page) response.

  1. If only one conclusion could be made from the research about learning at a distance, what would it be?

This is a personal response, but please relate your response to the readings. As stated previously, your response will be combined with your Assignment 3.1 responses and saved as one document. Assignments 3.1 & 3.2 will be scored with the Reading Response scoring rubric criteria and submitted with Assignment 3.3 at the same time.

Your readings from Chapter 2 introduced you to Holmberg's Theory of Interaction and Communication, Michael Moore's Theory of Transactional Distance and Wedemeyer's Theory of Independent Study. Chapter 3 introduced you to research on learner perceptions, learner attributes and interaction. Consider what you have read while you complete Assignment 3.3. (You may certainly use other sources if you would like to - please document them appropriately.)

Please choose one of the presentation options listed below to respond to the following questions:

  1. What are the barriers to bridging the gap that occurs when teacher and student are separated by space and time?
  2. Do you think it is worth the time and effort?
  3. At the end of your presentation, please include two ideas about how the technology you chose for your presentation might be used in a distance setting to help DECREASE the distance between student/teacher or teacher/student (explain).

Presentation Options: MS PowerPoint or other presentation software, MS Word or other word processing software ( 2 pages double spaced)

20 Points Possible

12 Points - Content includes personal opinion blended with theory and research from the readings (and possible additional sources) and stays within the assignment length guidelines.

8 Points - Idea(s) on how the chosen presentation technology can be used to decrease the distance is based on readings and/or video fromLlesson 3 and not completely based on opinion. Explanation included.

Submitting your Assignments

When you have completed all three assignments (3.1, 3.2 & 3.3) please submit them all at the same time. Your assignments should be combined in a Word file with the lesson name (Assignment 3) followed by your name, email address, and the date. Please clearly identify each of the three sections of the overall assignment. Your paper should be double spaced using a standard font such as Arial, Helvetica, or Times New Roman. Most formatting questions can be resolved by using the APA Publication Manual guidelines. Make sure you have saved your file on your computer with the name “Assignment3”. After you have saved your file, go to the student interface and submit your assignment for grading. Click here if you need additional information regarding submission of your assignment.
