Now that you have had some time to discuss your views of the field of IDT and became acquainted with more general terminology and ethics of in the field, let's take a look at how the field developed over time.
Now, please read Chapter 2: A history of Instructional Design and Technology of the book Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology by Reiser and Dempsey. Chapters from this book will be used throughout this course.
In this chapter, Reiser describes how the systematic design of instruction (instructional design) and the use of media for instructional purposes (instructional media) have formed the core of the field of Instructional Design and Technology. As developments in these areas have generally occurred independent of each other, he therefore describes their histories separately. To organize the many historical events and developments in the field that you will read about in that book chapter, please create your own timeline.
Description
In Chapter 2: A history of Instructional Design and Technology, you learned about historical evolution of the field of IDT from an instructional design and instructional media perspective. Based on what you read about these two histories, develop your initial interactive timeline to describe the evolution of the field of IDT.
There are many free online resources that can aid you in the development of online interactive timelines. Examples are Tiki Toki, TimeToast, and Sutori (create an educators account for Sutori).
In lessons 5 and 6, you will learn more about the influence of theories of instruction and learning on the historical development of the field. In lesson 7, you will learn more about current definitions and perspectives on IDT. Based on what you will learn in these next lessons, you will likely further refine and update your timeline over time. You will therefore be asked to resubmit your modified timeline in lesson 7.
Submitting Your Assignment
You will submit this assignment together with assignment 4.2 at the end of this lesson. Put all assignments for this lesson (4.1, 4.2) into a single Word file. At the top of this document you should have the lesson name, and underneath that should be your name, email address, and the date. Below, write “Assignment 4.1” and put the link to your online interactive timeline. Do not submit this assignment until you have also completed assignment 4.2.
