Lesson 1: Introduction to Instructional Design and Technology

Introduction

Greetings, and welcome to the ITMA program. You are about to embark on a journey that will lead you down a path towards many wonderful experiences. During that time you will acquire new knowledge and skills that will hopefully be a great benefit to you in the future. This course is designed to introduce you to the field of Instructional Design and Technology as well as provide you with an overview of the various career options and other learning opportunities you will encounter as an ITMA student at Virginia Tech.

As you probably know, the ITMA program is comprised of 30 credit hours. The typical ITMA student completes three credit hours each academic semester and six credit hours each summer, thus completing the program in three years. However, the program is flexible so you may enroll in more courses during terms when your schedule can accommodate the additional work.

During your time in the ITMA program you will be required to create an online professional development portfolio. You will work on this portfolio as you progress through the program. Some of the portfolio components will come straight from assignments in the various modules, while other components will need to be added by you. It is therefore important to save and store your files as you go throughout the program. It is to your benefit in the program to avoid using spaces in your file names. For example, it would be better to call your file “Assignment2.1”, rather than “Assignment 2.1.” This way, you won’t have spaces or underscores in your portfolio links later on.
