Lesson 6: Social Cognitive Views of Learning and Motivation
Introduction

In the previous lesson, you were introduced to social factors that can influence learning from the perspective of the learning sciences and constructivism. In this lesson, you will be introduced to more social factors that can affect learning. This time, you will learn about them from a social cognitive perspective. We will explore different concepts related to social cognitive theory, such as self-efficacy, observational learning, and self-regulated learning. Please learn more about social cognitive views of learning and motivation by studying the readings for this lesson.

Reflection
The Marshmallow Experiment

Self-control and the ability to delay gratification are often tied to self-regulation. A famous experiment related to self-control and delayed gratification is the marshmallow experiment. In this experiment, children were given a marshmallow (or another piece candy) and were told that they could either eat it now or wait and get two pieces of candy later. It is quite a simple instrument that you can easily try to simulate at home with your own children, younger cousins or nephews. Interestingly, children who waited to eat the marshmallows (or other candy) were more successful later in life than children who showed less self-control. The children who waited longer later generally had higher SAT scores, a lower Body Mass Index (BMI), and even a lower rate of drug use. Please take a look at a discussion of the researcher who performed this test (Walter Mischel) and his views on the experiment and whether this is a skill that can be learned and practiced. What do you think about this experiment and how do you think that this test relates to the concept of volition that you learned about in the readings? What could be some other ways that you think this self-discipline or willpower could be taught besides using the method Mischel mentions?

Application
Assignment 6: Math Problems or Other Problems?

Below you will find a scenario-based slideshow in which you will find your (fictitious) brother struggle in his developmental math course. Please look carefully at the slideshow to learn more about your brother’s situation. Similarly to the scenario presented in the previous lesson, some information may be more relevant than other information, so please take a careful look at the slideshow to see how you can best help your brother, Andrew.

Based on what you learned in the readings for this lesson, how can you help Andrew become a more self-regulated learner and help him improve his math-related self-efficacy? Obviously, Andrew will need to work out a lot in his own mind. However, what are some strategies that you can model or teach him so he will be better equipped to succeed in his developmental math course and later on at Virginia Tech? Please write a short paper (approximately 2-3 pages, APA style) in which you describe your plan to help Andrew become a more self-regulated learner and improve his math-related self-efficacy.
