Lesson 10: Your Views Towards Learning
Introduction

Throughout this course, you looked at many different perspectives of learning. You learned about the main theories of learning, motivation, and of cognitive and language development. You did not only learn about the main concepts and principles of each of these theories, you also applied guidelines related to these theories in different settings. Everything you learned will now come together in this lesson. In this final lesson, you will not only rethink your philosophy of learning that you developed in lesson 1, you will also develop a mini-lesson in which you will have the chance to apply principles from these different theories towards a topic that is of interest to you. There will not be any new readings for this lesson. However, please feel free to revisit the past readings or explore theories that interest you through other books and articles from the library or the internet.

Application
Assignment 10.1: Revised Philosophy of Learning

Revise your draft

In the first lesson of this course, you developed your draft of your philosophy of learning. After you wrote this draft, you have learned about many different theories and approaches towards learning. Therefore, please revise your philosophy of learning draft by answering the same six questions again based on how you currently view learning. Please copy your original answers from the first assignment and highlight any changes to your original information by changing the color of the font. The hope is that you will take the information you have learned from the semester and from completing each assignment to add to your own philosophy of learning.

  1. How does learning occur?
  2. Which factors influence learning?
  3. How do you know when someone has learned something?
  4. What is the role of the learner and teacher in this process?
  5. How can you influence learning in others (which strategies can you use)?
  6. What could be the role of technology to enhance learning?

Submitting Your Assignment
You will submit this assignment together with assignment 10.2 at the end of this lesson. Prepare both assignments for this lesson (10.1 and 10.2) into a single Word file. At the top of your Word file, add the lesson name, your name, email address, and the date. Below, write “Assignment 10.1”, and type out your philosophy of learning and reflection. Do not submit this assignment until you have also completed assignment 10.2.

Grading Criteria

  • Revised your philosophy of learning and provided thoughtful answers to each of the six questions (10)
  • Your reflection showed that you are aware of your own thought processes, biases, and preconceptions, and how these may have changed over time (10)

Points: 20

Assignment 10.2: Final Project

For assignment 8.2, you developed a draft of your final project. You have therefore already provided input to many of the items that you will see listed below. It may be a good idea to revisit these depending on the feedback you received from your course instructor after you submitted assignment 8.2. To complete the final project, please make sure you address the following five items:

  1. Describe a specific instructional objective that you would like to teach. This can relate to anything in your personal or professional life (e.g. identify the main processes of the water cycle, compare and contrast geometrical shapes, critically evaluate World War II propaganda posters, etc.).
  2. Choose and describe your target audience (e.g. developmental level, motivation, and level of expertise) and learners’ context for this lesson (e.g. a K-12 classroom environment, an out of school context, a distance education workshop, or a just in time training).
  3. This will be a technology enhanced lesson. Therefore, please describe your delivery medium and in what way you used any technology to enhance learning. Make sure that you describe how any of these technologies could enhance learning (e.g. in what ways would your learners benefit from using collaboration tools, presentation tools, blogs/wikis, an instructional video, a web-based tutorial, etc.).
  4. Develop your technology enhanced mini-lesson to teach your objective to your target audience. Develop all your instructional materials, and if necessary, describe how these would be delivered. For your mini-lesson, make sure that you apply at least five different concepts or principles from at least two different chapters of the book.
  5. Please describe the concepts and principles that you have applied in your mini-lesson (e.g. mnemonics, multiple representations of content, problem-based learning, distributed practice, and self-reinforcement) and describe how you have applied them. Again, please make sure that you applied at least five different concepts from at least two different chapters of the book. Do not only describe the concepts you have applied, but also describe how you applied them. For example, as you describe that you used problem-based learning, explain which steps or strategies you used (e.g. students first came up with a challenge, they then generated ideas, etc.).

Submitting Your Assignment
Under your last assignment (10.1) in your Word file, write “Assignment 10.2” and respond to the items above. You can either add your lesson materials as a separate link (like in the case of an instructional video or website) or embed the materials into your Word file. If you developed other files (like a PowerPoint), it would also be possible to zip all your files together (like your Word file and PowerPoint file) and submit this zip file to the student interface. When you have completed both assignments of this lesson, make sure you name your final file “Assignment10”. After you have saved your file, go to the student interface and submit your assignment for grading. Click here if you need additional information regarding submission of your assignment.

Grading Criteria

  • Described your instructional objective (2.5)
  • Described your target audience and learners’ context (2.5)
  • Described your delivery medium, use of technology, and how the technology is used to enhance learning (5)
