Multimedia Evaluation Chart

Here are some questions to ask regarding each of the evaluation criteria. Use these questions to guide your evaluations. You may not be able to answer all of these questions (for example, if you are not familiar with the topic), but do the best you can from your perspective.

Relevance of instructional content
Is the instructional content relevant for the instructional goals and context?
  • Are effective instructional strategies used?
  • Are realistic examples provided?
  • Is the content accurate?
  • Is the content current and up to date?
  • Does the instruction match the objectives?
  • Is the writing clear?
  • Are the directions clear?
  • Does the sequence of instruction seem proper?
Relevance of multimedia content
Is the multimedia content relevant for the instructional goals and context?
  • Are the graphics and other elements coherent?
  • Are the multimedia elements used effectively?
  • Are the multimedia elements accurate?
  • Do the elements match up with the instruction?
Appropriateness of instructional content
Is the instructional content appropriate for the audience and the subject matter?
  • Is the subject matter appropriate for the target audience?
  • Is the reading level appropriate for the target audience?
  • Is there unnecessary jargon?
  • Are the objectives appropriate to the target audience?
  • Is the instruction too easy or difficult for the learners?
  • Is the pacing too slow or too fast?
Appropriateness of multimedia content
Is the multimedia content appropriate for the audience and subject matter?
  • Are the images, sounds, and other elements appropriate for the learners?
  • Is the overall look and feel of the program appropriate?
  • Is there anything that seems out of place?
Sufficiency of instructional content
Is the instructional content sufficient to lead to the achievement of the goal?  
  • Was there enough explanation of the concepts or procedures being described?
  • Is there enough content provided to achieve the goal?
  • Is there too much content provided?
  • Is there any unnecessary content included?
  • Is there any important information missing?
  • Are all of the objectives addressed?
  • Does the content cover the topic in the best way?
  • Are there enough examples provided?
  • Is there enough practice?
  • Is sufficient feedback provided?
  • Will the learners learn what they are supposed to learn?
Sufficiency of multimedia content
Is the multimedia content sufficient to support the instruction? Is there anything left out that could have been a benefit?
  • Is there enough multimedia included?
  • Are there any unnecessary elements included?
  • Is there any place where a graphic, animation, audio clip, or video clip would have helped?
Instructional events
Does the program address all of Gagn?'s events of instruction, except for assessment? Here are Gagn?'s nine events:
  1. Gaining attention
    • Is attention gained at the beginning?
    • Are students motivated in some way?
    • Are students informed of the relevance of the instruction?
  2. Informing learner of objectives
    • Are learners informed of the objectives at the beginning?
    • Are the objectives stated clearly?
  3. Stimulating recall of prior learning
    • Are students reminded of relevant prior information?
    • Recognition and recall questions used?
  4. Presenting the stimulus material
    • Are proper instructional strategies employed?
    • Enough examples and nonexamples provided?
  5. Providing learning guidance
    • Is the information organized in a meaningful way?
    • Are students directed to important information?
  6. Eliciting the performance
    • Are practice exercises provided?
    • Is enough practice provided?
  7. Providing feedback about performance correctness
    • Is feedback provided?
    • Is feedback immediate?
  8. Assessing the performance
  9. Enhancing retention and transfer
    • Are strategies provided to enhance retention and transfer?
    • Is the new information related to future events?
Technical aspects
Do the technical aspects of the program function properly?
  • Is it obvious to the user how they are supposed to navigate the program?
  • Does the navigation work?
  • Do the graphics appear when and where they are supposed to?
  • Do the animations load and play properly?
  • Do the sound files load and play properly?
  • Do the video files load and play properly?
  • Is there a consistent design theme?
  • Is the text material readable (size and color)?
  • Are the computer screens balanced and legible?
  • Is the program easy to use?
  • Will it appeal to learners?
  • Are there grammatical and spelling errors?
