General Information
1. We will email you the semester in which you are registered for your last 3 hours (IDT Portfolio). This email will contain graduation guidelines and details. Please respond to this email so we know your intentions regarding graduation.
2.All students must submit the Application for Degree found in Hokie Spa.in This is the ITMA students responsibility. Please refer to these instructions to complete your Application for Degree card. Student's who have their personal information listed as confidential will not have their names appear in the commencement bulletin. If you plan on attending commencement and want your name listed in the bulletin, please remove the confidential status when you submit the Application for Degree .
3. Once you submit your application you will receive a checklist generated from Hokie SPA. This checklist is for all Masters students at Virginia Tech and most of the items on this list do not apply to our on-line students. Our students must have:
- Approved Plan of Study.
- Submit Application for degree.
- Submit URLs for Portfolio and portfolio guide to itma@vt.edu.
- Pay all student fees at Student Accounts.
- Grades posted on all course work - this should happen before graduation.
- Official transcripts sent to Graduate School for transfer credits, if applicable.
Note: If courses are older than 5 years you will need to fill out the course justification form and send it to Nancy Nolen.

ITMA students can attend the Virginia Tech commencement ceremony. There are two ceremonies, Fall and Spring. If you plan on finishing in the Summer, you can walk in the Spring ceremony. If you plan on participating in the ceremony, you will need to purchase a cap and gown from the University Bookstore. They will ship them to you so that you can have them in advance of commencement. Commencement times are subject to change. (The ITMA program is listed under the School of Education). The colors for the edging of hoods for ITMA graduates are light blue and the tassel of caps for Master's students are black. You can also purchase a class ring at https://www.alumni.vt.edu/classrings.html.
Students should check the Graduate School's Commencement site for up to date Graduation information.
ITMA students receive a Master of Arts in Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Instructional Technology. The same degree is awarded to on-campus and on-line students. As part of the Virginia Tech IT program, ITMA meets strenuous accreditation guidelines. The ITMA program has been approved by the Graduate School at Virginia Tech and thus the degree is officially recognized by Virginia Tech.
Note: The Graduate School will send out each diploma by mail.
