How to Apply to the ITMA Program
Here we provide some basic instructions for applying to the Virginia Tech Graduate School and the ITMA program. We recommend the fairly simple online application, and we suggest you keep this browser window open while filling out the online application so that you can refer to these instructions as needed. Below is a summary of the process:
- Create an account (be sure to record your user name and password). Examine the instructions.
- Complete the application form. You will need the username/password that you created in step one. You can save your account and access it later.
- Submit your application and pay the fee.
Step 1 - Creating Your Account
Access the Create Your Account form and fill it out completely. Be sure to follow the rules for creating your user name and password. VT gets a number of applicants, so don't be surprised if you need to change your user name. A new screen will present your user name and password when they are accepted. Write them down. Don't forget them.
The Instructions page helps you with the rest of the process. You should read through the "Web Form Features" section thoroughly. This section tells you how you can check on your application as well as providing other important information about applying online.
Step 2 - Fill in the Application
The online application is composed of six parts. The application engine will recognize which parts of the application are applicable to you. Each required part must be completed fully in order to officially submit you application to the Graduate School.

Part 1: Enrollment Information
Give the details of the program that you are applying for.

- Campus: Virtual Campus (on-line)

- Select "Education, Curriculum and Instruction (Instructional Technology) (MAED)" from the list
- Education Specialist (Select from pulldown) - Sample

Give the details about yourself.
Important information:
- International Applicants must apply using their legal name exactly as it appears on their passport.
- Returning VT Students: Supply your VT Student ID number
- Citizenship: Permanent Resident [PR] - (Copy of PR Registration Card Required), Non-Resident Alien - (Visa Required)

Give the details about your academic history.
Important information:
- Use the "Search" button beside an empty field to find the college or university.
- Enter all undergraduate and graduate education you have received.
- Understand your right to waive access to academic records.
- Note: GRE is not a requirement for the ITMA program
Part 4: Request for Graduate In-state Tuition Sample (Click sample to enlarge)
Give the details about your official Virginia residency.
Important information:
- Supply two years worth of past home addresses for residency information.
- Answer all "Yes/No" questions.
- Check the box at the end of the form certifying the accuracy of your information.
Part 5: Immigration Instructions for International Applicants Sample
Give the details about your official immigration status.
Part 6: Supplemental Information & Certification Sample
Give the details about your intended area of concentration.
Important information:
- Select Instructional Technology under the Learning Sciences and Technologies.
- Take note of the addresses where you will send the required documents and official transcipts.
- Check the box at the end of the form certifying the accuracy of your information.
Step 3 - Submitting Your Application
On Page 3, finish filling out your information and then click on "Pay, Save, and Send" if you are sure that your application is complete and accurate. Then you may select your online payment option and finish your application. Upload a copy of your unofficial transcript(s). Applicants who are accepted for admission and who decide to come to VT should then send an official transcript (showing conferral of their degree) to the Graduate School and our School of Education liaison before they enroll (addresses below).
