ITMA staff and facilitators are devoted to providing the best on-line learning experience possible for our students. The ITMA Staff is made up of different individuals who respond to emails.

Ken Potter, Ph.D

Dr. Ken Potter is an instructor of education specializing in Instructional Design and Technology. He earned a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia. He has published and presented on a variety of instructional technology issues ranging from distance education to emerging technologies for 21st century classrooms.

Dr. Potter has published in the Journal of Computing in Teacher Education and presented at such national conferences as the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education, American Educational Research Association, and Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Dr. Potter has worked as a co-principal investigator on a three-year grant project funded by the Department of Education related to the use of technology in teacher preparation programs. In addition to research, Dr. Potter holds a position in the Office of Educational Research and Development and instructs graduate level courses for the Instructional Design & Technology program area at Virginia Tech. He has taught such courses as Foundation of Technology Tools; Research in Instructional Technology; Principles of Instructional Design; Instructional Technology: Audio Visual and Computer Uses; and Telecommunications and Distance Learning.

Dr. Potter’s research development work and teaching enrich the Virginia Tech School of Education community.

Emily Bishop

Emily Bishop currently works as the ITMA coordinator and has been with the program for the past eight years. She responds to questions and concerns about the ITMA program and provides support and feedback to students as needed. Emily works with course facilitators, faculty and staff to make any necessary updates/revisions to course materials. Emily works with upcoming ITMA graduates, making sure that all course requirements have been met.

Janet Nichols

Janet Nichols has been a facilitator for the ITMA program for several years. She is interested in learning theories and educational research. She currently working on a project that is using technology to support an in-school mentoring program in order to increase the retention of first and second year teachers.

Mary Ellen Pierson

Mary Ellen Pierson has been working with computers and computer users in education and research since 1976, and with the Internet and the Web since 1996. Over these years, Mary Ellen has interacted with instructors, researchers, students, and non-students, helping each realize their goals for a course, project, assignment, or lifelong learning. She has been actively involved in the ITMA program since 2004. Mary Ellen was instrumental in providing computers and computer training to Veterinary students in Mongolia (1998), and participated in the development of the USDA/DHS Agriculture and Food Vulnerability Assessment Training Program (2006). In addition to travelling to visit their daughters, Mary Ellen and her husband recently added kayaking to their list of favorite outdoor activities.
